La canción Thriller, que en buena medida relanzó las ventas del disco, marcó una época al usar ruidos de puertas chirriantes y un recitado de Vincent Price, actor de culto del cine de terror. En 2005, el artista español Luixi Toledo demandaría a Michael Jackson por esta canción (aunque su autor es Rod Temperton) al ver un supuesto plagio de su canción Exorcismo. A pesar del parecido de la canción del español con Thriller, aun no se ha dado un veredicto en firme.
El álbum consiguió también 58 discos de platino, dos de uranio, uno de diamante, y además 8 Premios Grammy (superando el record de 6 grammys en 1983 (fecha de entrega del premio), que marcó Toto con el álbum Toto IV), siendo el primero en alcanzar esta marca y actualmente superada por Carlos Santana con Supernatural (9 estatuillas). Incluye éxitos como Beat It, Billie Jean y Thriller.
El vídeo musical que acompañó al tema Thriller es un hito en la historia de los medios. Esta producción de 13 minutos de duración, dirigida por John Landis, es semejante a un corto de cine y produjo sensación por su trama, sus imágenes impactantes y coreografías. Se cuenta que este clip propulsó las ventas del álbum, después del sencillo Billie Jean.
